What is the University Honors Program?

The purpose of the Honors Program is to help high ability students expand their potential, both at the University level and within the College of Human Sciences. We offer educational and intellectual opportunities to work with faculty and staff members in your major in the classrom, in research, and in professional development.

The College of Human Sciences program is affiliated with the University Honors Program and you can read more about both programs at the various links provided below.

What are the benefits of joining Honors?

Members of the Honors Program are given priority scheduling for the 1st day of the registration for the classifiaction ahead of their projected status. For example, if you will be a sophomore at the end of the semester, your registration start date will be the 1st day for juniors. This helps to ensure that Honors students will be able to complete their individualized academic programs. Early registration is especially helpful for Kinesiology students juggling numerous lab classes and other scheduling issues.

See the University and College links below for additional benefits such as computer facilities, Honors courses & seminars, extended loan privileges at the library, use of the Jischke Honors Building 24-7, residence hall options, Honors activities & conferences and more!

When do I join Honors?

If you are currently a member of the Freshman Honors Program, you should apply to the College of Human Sciences (CHS) Honors Program during the second semester of your freshman year. If you are not in the Freshman Honors Program, but your Iowa State GPA is 3.35 or above, you may apply to the Honors Program at any time by filling out the University Honors Program Application. Students typically need at least three semesters to complete all of the requirements to graduate with Honors, so join as early as possible. Application deadlines are typically early October and early February for students to receive priority registration privileges for the next semester.
