Sending your student off to college is a big step in any parent's life. Although many parents have been in your shoes, some of the following information may help you ease into this transition.

Tips and Assorted Tidbits for Parents:
1.
College life is an adjustment for most students. We highly recommend that your student be encouraged to stay on campus for most weekends (rather than returning home). Campus life offers many opportunities to meet new people and experience campus life which helps them to adjust!

2.
Iowa State and the Department of Kinesiology offer many opportunities that promote personal and professional growth. We have several departmental student clubs (see Student Clubs section of Kinesiology homepage) and ISU offers 500+ organizations which students can get involved in.

3.
There is a Parents Advisory Line (PAL) which you can call which will connect you with a variety of offices on campus which can answer your questions and provide you with the information you might want. Their phone number is 800-773-8546.

4.
Be sure you know the name and contact information for your student's academic adviser. They can be a helpful stop in getting information. However, your student's right to privacy is guaranteed by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Please read the information at the following link to see what is"public" and what is "private" information regarding your student www.iastate.edu/~registrar/info/confid.html

What is Expected of Your Student and How Do We Help Them?
1.
Faculty will expect your student to study 2 hours outside of class for every hour spent in the classroom. For example, for each 3-hour course, a student should spend an additional 6 hours of study/week outside of this class.

2.
It is expected that a student will take responsibility for their learning. If a student needs faculty assistance, the student should contact the faculty member and request a time to meet during the faculty's office hours. If tutoring is needed or extra assistance with time management or study skills, the student should contact their academic adviser to discuss what resources are available to them.

3.
An orientation course is offered by Kinesiology (Ex Sp 255) which acquaints the student with campus resources, facilities and services available to help them get answers to questions and/or work through a variety of academic and/or personal issues.

4.
The Kinesiology advising staff are full-time employees who are there to assist students with class scheduling, career and professional development and to help them analyze situations and become independent and functioning members of the campus community.

Be sure to stay in frequent contact with your student as they adjust to college life. It is an exciting time, full of personal growth and exploration. Knowing that you are interested in what they are doing and what they are learning is important to them whether they demonstrate that to you or not.
