HHP Changes to Kinesiology
ISU’s Department of Health and Human Performance has recently received approval from the Iowa Board of Regents to change the names of both it’s department and it’s undergraduate and graduate majors. The department is now called the Department of Kinesiology. The undergraduate degree is Kinesiology and Health, while advanced degrees (MS & PHD) are Kinesiology.
The name change was requested to better represent the areas of study in the department. According to professor and chair, Dr. Jerry Thomas, "we study physical activity and human movement, especially its impact on health -- the exact meaning of kinesiology. Most major research universities are changing or already have changed their name to kinesiology.”
Although the names have changed, there are no changes in the academic programs offered by the department. Academic programs lead to careers in: athletic training, community/public health, community sport & recreation, dance health & fitness, physical education teaching, and coaching. Career tracks also prepare students for graduate work and professional schools in physical and occupational therapy, human medicine, physician assistance, chiropractic and other allied health professions.
