Health & Human Performance
Advising Services

A) INTRODUCTION -- Goals and Responsibilities

The goals of academic advising in Health & Human Performance are: 1) to assist in the student's intellectual and professional/ career development, 2) to help the student sharpen decision-making skills and 3) to provide guidance in the integration the student's academic program with their future professional and career goals.

The adviser will assist the student in the development of an academic program and semester-by-semester plan which not only meets the student's career objectives but also will meet the requirements to graduate from their chosen curriculum. It is the responsibility of the student to know and understand the requirements for his/her degree and to maintain a plan with their adviser to ensure all requirements are completed according to the schedule desired by the student.

B) ADVISER ASSIGNMENTS

Each student is assigned an adviser upon entering the department who will work with them for the first 3-4 semesters at Iowa State. During this time, the adviser will acquaint the student with a variety of university facilities and support services as well as instruct the student regarding general university policies and procedures. Career exploration and early professional development will also be a main focus during the first few semesters in the department.

During the final 3-4 semesters of their academic program, most
students change advisers to get assistance in securing a career-related field experience(internship) and to acquaint them with job search skills and strategies as they near entry into the job market.

A student may change advisers at any time in their academic program by placing a request with the adviser to whom they wish to change.
