UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS


The Department of Kinesiology offers the following scholarships and awards to undergraduate majors as well as ISU students involved in dance. Scholarships/Awards applications are available in Rm 201 and 205 Forker Bldg, or online. The application process and accompanying due dates are listed with each award description. Please contact Cindy Frederickson at (515)294-7092 for more information.

BARBARA E. FORKER LEADERSHIP AWARDS

PURPOSE:

To recognize students in the Department of Kinesiology who have contributed leadership and service to their profession. One award given to each of five career options (AT, CPH, ExSci, HFM, and PEL)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Student must have a minimum of 70 credits and a cumulative GPA of 2.8 at the time of application.
  2. Student must show professional involvement and leadership skills through any or all of the following:
    • Involvement in departmental clubs through membership and leadership roles.
    • Willingness to take on and complete given responsibilities.
    • Ability to get people involved and/or to think (a catalyst as well as a worker).
    • Ability to think/plan ahead with regard to plans that affect the present as well as the future.
    • Ability to generate and share ideas.
    • Having organizational and time management skills.
    • Possession of the interpersonal skills needed to do the above.

PROCEDURE:

Complete the Award and Scholarship Application form (available online or in the Advising Office) and turn in by no later than February 12 .

GERMAINE G. GUIOT SCHOLARSHIP FOR COMMUNITY/PUBLIC HEALTH

PURPOSE:

To recognize a JUNIOR LEVEL student in COMMUNITY/PUBLIC HEALTH who has achieved high academic standing and has contributed significant service to his/her curriculum and profession.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must have a 3.25 cumulative GPA.
  2. Must be enrolled in the Community/Public Health option and classified as a junior by the beginning of fall semester with at least three (3) semesters remaining until graduation at the time of application.
  3. Preference given to those with financial need.
  4. Student must have demonstrated service and leadership through some or all of the following:
    • Professional volunteer/work experiences.
    • Membership and active role in departmental clubs.Membership, attendance and contribution to professional organizations, workshops, meetings.
    • Involvement as student rep on department, college or university committees.
    • Papers, projects or presentations which support professional potential in CPH.

PROCEDURE:Complete the Award and Scholarship Application form (available online or in the Advising Office) and turn in by no later than February 12.

AWARD: $1,000 scholarship and ISU medallion.

GERMAINE G. GUIOT SCHOLARSHIP FOR EXERCISE SCIENCE

PURPOSE:

To recognize a JUNIOR LEVEL student in EXERCISE SCIENCE who has achieved high academic standing and has contributed significant service to his/her curriculum and profession.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must have a 3.25 cumulative GPA.
  2. Must be enrolled in the Kinesiology and Health curriculum and classified as a junior by the beginning of fall semester with at least three (3) semesters remaining until graduation at the time of application.Preference given to those with financial need.
  3. Student must have demonstrated service and leadership through some or all of the following:
    • Professional volunteer/work experiences.

PURPOSE:

GERMAINE G. GUIOT OUTSTANDING SENIOR (FEMALE)  and the HARRY SCHMIDT OUTSTANDING SENIOR (MALE)

PURPOSE:

To recognize the most outstanding SENIORS (FEMALE AND MALE) enrolled in Kinesiology and Health.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum GPA of 3.25 cumulative.
  2. Must be a major in Kinesiology and Health .
  3. Must be graduating in the calendar year of the award.
  4. Must have made outstanding contributions to the KinH curriculum through some/all of the following activities:

- Professional volunteer/work experiences.

- Membership and active role in departmental clubs.

- Membership, attendance and contribution to professional organizations, workshops, meetings.

- Involvement as student rep on department, college or university committees.

PROCEDURE:No application needed -- slate of candidates prepared by Kinesiology awards committee with selection of recipient by faculty vote. Recipients honored at Kinesiology Spring Awards luncheon.

CHERI GOSLAR/CAP & TIPPY TIMM SCHOLARSHIP

PURPOSE:To recognize a Junior level student in PHYSICAL EDUCATION LICENSURE who has high academic standing and has contributed significant service to his/her curriculum and profession.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must have 3.25 cumulative GPA.
  2. Must be enrolled in the Physical Education Teacher Licensure option and classified as a junior by the beginning of fall semester with at least three(3) semesters remaining until graduation at the time of application.
  3. Preference given to those with financial need.
  4. Students must have demonstrated service and leadership through some or all of the following:
    • Professional volunteer/work experiences
    • Membership and active role in departmental clubs Membership, attendance and contributions to professional organizations, workshops and meetings
    • Involvement as a student representative on department, college, or university committees

PROCEDURE:

Complete the Award and Scholarship Application form (available online or in the Advising Office) and turn in by no later than February 12.

AWARD: $1000 + ISU medallion

BERAN INTERNATIONAL / SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP

PURPOSE:To provide partial support for a student participating in a sport, physical education or exercise science experience outside of the United States (but not with a varsity or sport club team) OR a service project in a related field with minority or inner-city groups in the United States.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Kinesiology and Health major.
  2. Minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  3. At least two semesters in residence at Iowa State.

PROCEDURE:Complete an Award and Scholarship Application form (available online or in the Advising Office). Requests will be considered at any time by the KinH Awards Committee. Two personal reference letters are required.

INCOMING FRESHMAN SCHOLARSHIP

PURPOSE:To recognize early professional potential and academic promise in an incoming first-year student.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum high school rank of 90% and ACT of 26.Entering Iowa State during the fall semester to pursue a major in Kinesiology and Health.
  2. High school activities and/or work experience which indicate leadership potential and early professional interest in careers related to physical activity, sport, fitness and/or health.

PROCEDURE:Complete the KinH Awards and Scholarships application form (online) and solicit two letters of reference (one from a teacher or school official). Mail to the KinH Awards Committee by no later than March 1.

AWARD: One $500 scholarship given each year.

TRANSFER STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

PURPOSE:To recognize excellence in scholarship and early professional commitment during undergraduate work at a community college within the state of Iowa.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and a minimum of 45 credits from an Iowa community college.
  2. Student must enter Iowa State in the fall semester to major in either Kinesiology and Health.
  3. Student must be actively involved in early professional experiences which enhance and/or lead to careers in physical activity, sport, fitness or health (ie. jobs or volunteer experiences, clubs, organizations, etc.).

PROCEDURE:

Complete the KinH Awards and Scholarship application (online) and solicit two reference letters (one from an instructor or school official). Mail to the KinH Awards Committee by no later than March 1.

AWARD: One $500 scholarship given each year.

NASPE OUTSTANDING STUDENT AWARD

PURPOSE:To recognize an outstanding student in the teacher preparation track and to forward their name as a candidate to compete for the national Outstanding Student Award given at the AAHPERD annual convention.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Student must be an KinH major in the teacher preparation track.
  2. Student must be completing their student teaching experience during the academic year in which selected.

PROCEDURE:The KinH Teacher Education Committee will forward names of deserving students to the KinH Awards Committee who will select the winner. No application needed. The student's name will then be forwarded to the AAHPERD National Office.

AWARD: Plaque.

WHITFIELD/JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIP

PURPOSE:

To provide emergency financial assistance to a female KinH student. First priority will be given to assist with immediate emergency needs (ie. tuition/books, personal use for travel for family emergency, etc.). Second priority will be for students who have secured the maximum financial aid awardable and who cannot finish their academic program without assistance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be an undergraduate student currently enrolled at ISU in KinH. Must be a female and have sophomore, junior or senior classification.
  2. Must be able to demonstrate financial need through FAFSA for the current school year or through other information supplied to the funding committee.

PROCEDURE:Complete the Whitfield/Johnson Emergency Fund application form (available from adviser) with written support from the student's academic adviser. An application can be submitted at any time and will be reviewed by a committee.AWARD: Up to $2,000 can be awarded per semester with the opportunity for on-going aid if continued need is demonstrated.

WINIFRED TILDEN HIGH SCHOLAR AWARD

PURPOSE:To recognize the top scholar in each class (sophomore, junior, senior) within the Department of Kinesiology.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum cumulative GPA is 3.45.
  2. A transfer student will be considered after completion of a minimum of 24 credits at ISU.
  3. No student may receive an award more than one time in any one classification (sophomore, junior, senior).
  4. In case of a tie, two awards will be given.
  5. No freshman award is given.

PROCEDURE:The department Awards Committee will review and select the recipients - no application required. The awardees will be honored at the KinH Spring Awards luncheon.

BARBARA E. FORKER SCHOLARSHIP

PURPOSE:To recognize an undergraduate student in Health & Human Performance who exhibits academic excellence -- preference given to a student who is interested in working with physically challenged individuals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be a full-time undergraduate student with a minimum GPA of 3.0 at Iowa State and with a min of 3 semesters remaining until graduation at the time of application.
  2. Demonstrated financial need through FAFSA form for current academic year. 
  3. Preference will be given to a student who has shown a commitment to projects and/or activities that involve physically challenged individuals.
  4. The award is to be given to one or more students per year and is renewable for up to five years if a student continues to meet the criteria.

PROCEDURE:

Complete the Award and Scholarship Application form (available online or in the Advising Office) and turn in by no later than February 12. A short essay on your past involvement with the physically challenged and your future plans to interact/assist with this group is required along with your application.

AWARD: Variable up to $1000

ANNA R. TOMAN DANCE AWARD

PURPOSE:To recognize an undergraduate student (member of Orchesis I) who has contributed significantly during the year to the dance program at Iowa State.QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must have a formal affiliation with Iowa State University.
  2. Must be a member in good standing of Orchesis I.

PROCEDURE:Persons are nominated by the members of Orchesis I with the final recipient selected by the Dance faculty -- no application required.

AWARD: $100 and token award.

CHARLOTTE WILKINSON AWARD

PURPOSE:To honor the memory of Charlotte Wilkinson, a past member of Orchesis II.Given to the member who has contributed the most in organization, choreography and performance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be affiliated with Iowa State University.
  2. Must be a member of Orchesis II andin good standing.

PROCEDURE:Nominations will be solicited from the membership and voted upon by the membership -- no application required

BETTY TOMAN OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO DANCE & AFFILIATED ARTS

PURPOSE:To recognize a dance student who has been involved in numerous dance organizations and who accepts/completes tasks beyond expectations to further dance on campus and in the community.

CRITERIA:

  1. Depth of involvement in dance classes, membership in Orchesis I & II, Iowa State Dance Tour Company, Stars Over VEISHEA, as a choreographer or in support activities such as lighting, costuming, or marketing.Effectiveness in involvement in dance and related activities.
  2. Length of involvement in dance groups and activities.

PROCEDURE FOR SELECTION:Nominations will be gathered from the various dance groups and forwarded to the dance faculty for final selection.

AWARD: Token award.

EVELYN JENSEN AWARD FOR ACHIEVEMENT IN OUTREACH

PURPOSE:To recognize a member of the Iowa State Dance Tour Company who demonstrates the ability to transmit dance knowledge and skill to a variety of people through performance and teaching.

CRITERIA:1) Member of the Iowa State Dance Tour Company.

PROCEDURE FOR SELECTION:Nominations will be submitted by the Iowa State Dance Tour Company and forwarded to the dance faculty for final selection.

AWARD: Token Award.

IOWA STATE DANCE SCHOLARSHIP

PURPOSE:To recognize a student in the Performing Arts major (dance emphasis) who has contributed to the ISU Dance program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be at least sophomore classification and a major in Performing Arts with a dance emphasis.
  2. Must be a contributing member to the ISU Dance program for at least one year.

PROCEDURE:

A student may self-nominate by submitting his/her name to the Dance faculty or Dance faculty may nominate a student. Recipient is then chosen by the Dance faculty. Award is given at the annual spring awards banquet.

AWARD: $500.
